Where Can I Buy Cheap Flight Tickets?

August 10, 2019

I recently spent a year traveling to 43 countries across 6 continents. I took over 60 flights during that period - and I almost never paid more than $200 per flight! How?

Here are the exact steps I use when I search for airfare:

  1. I clear my browser's cache because airline sites sometimes use it to track your purchases and charge you a higher rate!
  2. Then I go to to Google Flights. I've tried a LOT of different flight search programs and I've personally found that Google Flights has the best fares about 90% of the time.
  3. I then use the calendar feature to explore possible dates for cheaper fares.
  4. If I'm flexible on my destination, I click on the "Explore Destinations" feature, which opens up a map that will show you the prices for a ton of different destinations based on your selected dates and departure city.
  5. Google Flights will then send you to the actual booking site (it searches a bunch of them), where you can complete your purchase.
  6. Before actually booking though, I also quickly Google to see if there are any budget carriers that serve my destination.

Some of them, like Southwest in the USA, only publish their fares on their own site.

Remember that if your flight runs through the United States, in most circumstances you are entitled by law to a free 24 hour cancellation period (so if you see a cheap fare but need to confirm some other travel details first, you can snap it up and cancel later that day if it doesn't pan out).

If you're an American, be sure to consider whether it make sense to try to earn free flights through credit card sign up bonuses.

Are last minute flight tickets cheaper?

Contrary to popular belief, booking airline tickets late is often cheaper. Airlines know that business travellers tend to book their seats at the last minute and are willing to pay a premium for their flights. The logic follows that the earlier you book, the cheaper your seat will be. But it is not always so
